ADOLESCENT INPATIENT TREATMENT
ADOLESCENT SERVICES
Intermountain Hospital provides 24-hour inpatient care for adolescents ages 12 through 17 whose acute symptoms require a safe and structured therapeutic environment. Our interdisciplinary team approach includes Child and Adolescent certified psychiatrists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, case managers and mental health technicians who work closely with the individual and the individual's family. Our goal is to help each adolescent regain the necessary skills to be in maximum control of their emotions and behaviors and be able to proceed through life with a minimum of difficulty. And because behavioral health issues vary, we tailor our inpatient services to meet the specialized needs of each patient.

Our adolescent services include:
  • Inpatient Acute Psychiatric Services
  • Inpatient Detoxification Services
  • Substance Abuse Recovery Track for Adolescents
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Admission to the Adolescent program usually requires one or more of the following criteria:
  • A recent suicide attempt
  • Current "real and present danger" suicide ideation
  • Recent history of substantial self-mutilation or other self-endangering behavior
  • Assaultive threats or behavior toward family or others have occurred and there is a clear risk of escalation or repetition of this behavior in the near future
  • Disordered, psychotic or bizarre behavior such that the patient cannot function in everyday activities
  • Severe depression with functional impairment
  • Severe anxiety with functional impairment
  • A need for medically supervised detoxification for alcohol and/or other drugs
  • A need for inpatient medication stabilization due to history of severe side effects from psychotropic medications or the failure of outpatient medication management
  • A severe inability to attend to age-appropriate responsibilities or severe deterioration of family and school functioning that is too intensive to be evaluated at a lesser level of care
TREATMENT
Based on the assessment and orders obtained from the admitting psychiatrist, a master treatment plan is initiated. This plan is formally reviewed by the attending psychiatrist and program staff on an on-going basis. Daily review of treatment and patient progress occurs with the physician and nursing staff.

Family therapy and involvement is an important part of the treatment process and is incorporated into the treatment plan. Educational support is also available and is included into each adolescent's daily schedule as appropriate, as are communications with home schools to exchange lesson information and progress.

Discharge planning is initiated at the time of admission, then formulated and revised throughout the treatment stay. A written Aftercare Plan is developed with participation of the patient, family members, and the hospital staff. It includes recommendations for further treatment and/or follow-up activities.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE RECOVERY TRACK
Our substance abuse recovery track focuses on the needs of adolescents who are using/abusing drugs and alcohol and have may also have psychiatric/emotional problems. The recovery track, approximately 21-28 days in length, features a curriculum based specifically for adolescents with co-occurring disorders, including:
  • Acute psychiatric assessment and evaluation.
  • Acute comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation which helps determine the extent of drug and alcohol use or abuse.
  • Individualized treatment plan based on identified needs.
  • Substance abuse process and psycho-educational groups meet one time daily. These groups provide substance abuse/health-related education, but also focus on denial, the adolescent's use, the impact of that use for the patient and the patient's family, and the need to be in supportive recovery after discharge.
  • Group therapy that meets daily to address mental health, behaviors, or emotional issues.
  • Two individual weekly sessions with a substance abuse counselor.
  • Family therapy/case management to discuss the impact of drug/alcohol use on the patient and family, and to identify and coordinate ongoing support and aftercare.
  • Daily assessment and monitoring by a psychiatrist who provides medication and medication monitoring as needed.
  • Self help meeting at least one time weekly.
  • Educational services to keep each adolescent up to date with current school requirements.
  • Intensive case management with focus on discharge to appropriate aftercare.
