Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Adults and Mature Adults

Intermountain Hospital’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a co-occurring behavioral health, psychiatric and substance use disorder program that offers comprehensive clinical services for individuals experiencing increased symptoms, behavioral disturbances or other conditions negatively impacting mental and behavioral function in their daily lives without requiring around-the-clock psychiatric care.

The purpose of PHP is to evaluate and treat psychiatric and/or substance use concerns and/or to help prevent relapse or the need for hospitalization. Participants in this program must not pose an immediate risk to themselves or others. This level of behavioral health care functions as an alternative to inpatient care, as transitional care following an inpatient stay, in lieu of continued hospitalization, as a step-down service or when the severity of symptoms is such that success in a less acute level of care is tenuous.

Using a group therapy model, the program actively engages patients in the process of learning more about their disorders, developing effective coping and interpersonal skills safely and effectively reintegrating back into their community. Through discussions, skill practices, role-playing and other activities, the program fosters patient competence in such aspects of daily living as medication adherence and education; goal setting; coping effectively; stress management; interpersonal relationships and social interactions; managing time and expectations; community living; and more.

A co-occurring disorder is when a person suffers from both substance abuse and mental health issues. Solving one problem does not solve the other, and both must be addressed for the patient to begin their journey to recover. Treatment for a substance use problem is not one-size-fits-all, and the treatment, and treatment provider you choose matters. The dedicated professionals who work with our patients will provide the necessary tools, skills and education to assist you in your journey to a happier, healthier life.

Treating just the physical symptoms of a substance use problem does not usually fix the overall problem. We focus on long-term success, taking into account your mental health. Mental health disorders and substance abuse often go hand-in-hand, causing a co-occurring disorder. Choosing an adult outpatient substance abuse program that understands the importance of mental health, and focuses on you as a whole person, can make a massive difference when it comes to long term recovery.

In PHP, patients attend five hours a day, Monday through Friday. All therapy is provided by a Masters-level clinical supervised by the clinical director. This includes four hours of clinical group therapy, nursing assessments and lunch. Patients also actively participate in a dietary group and activity groups including art therapy, yoga and mindfulness-based activities.

Why Choose Adult Partial Hospitalization?

An adult Partial Hospitalization Program offers more freedom than an inpatient stay while providing many of the same therapies and classes. The full-time day program provides outpatient adult mental health care throughout the day and then allows patients to return home or attend to community or familial responsibilities at night.

More structured than the IOP level of outpatient treatment program, a PHP can provide the necessary mental health treatment for your mental illness or substance abuse problem without requiring you to remain in a facility full time.

Do Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health Services Work?

Recovery is a journey, and adult outpatient treatment is not a one-size-fits-all process. Every patient is different and has unique needs. Our initial assessment will determine the right treatment plan for you so that we can get to the root of your behavioral health condition. The skills, education and tools we provide will help you work on living a happier, healthier life.

In addition to being an effective outpatient treatment method, the behavioral health services offered by a PHP can be bolstered when a patient is part of the continuum of care.

Research shows that the longer a patient remains in any level of treatment, the less likely they are to relapse. This means that a patient who attends an adult PHP program has a higher chance of recovery the longer they stay connected to treatment programs through steps down such as intensive outpatient programs or aftercare. Likewise, PHP is a great step-down from inpatient treatment or a step-up from outpatient behavioral health treatment such as an IOP.
