Partial Hospitalization Program for Outpatient Care

Skilled, compassionate care is available for people with mental and behavioral health issues. At Intermountain Hospital, you receive intensive, attentive therapy during the day and return home at night.

Behavioral Health Conditions Treated in a PHP

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) benefit people stepping down from inpatient mental healthcare who are ready for outpatient treatment. The program also serves those who need more support than traditional therapy and want to avoid inpatient hospitalization. We offer PHPs for teens ages 12 to 17 and adults 18 and older.

Intermountain Hospital treats a wide range of mental health conditions and behaviors, including:

  • Anxiety, worry and fear
  • Bipolar disorder and mood instability
  • Depression, grief and loss
  • Domestic violence
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Treatment-resistant diagnoses

What Happens in a PHP

Intermountain Hospital PHPs require in-person attendance five days per week, for both adults and adolescents. You first complete an intake assessment, on your own or with the help of family. The assessment helps us individualize your treatment plans and progress.

During our PHP, structured activities include:

  • Daily check-in to review goals, progress and challenges
  • Meals and snacks to keep you well-nourished all day long
  • Peer-group sessions to talk about common goals, shared frustrations and positive, hopeful moments
  • Individual therapy to strengthen mindfulness, regulate emotions, improve successful interpersonal relationships and manage difficult situations
  • Psychological education to enhance socialization, stress management and conflict resolution skills
  • Creative and recreational activities that can help you explore ideas and build new skills
  • Medication management of any prescribed mental health or detox drugs

Participants with a co-occurring substance use disorder (SUD) also receive treatment for dependencies. We treat alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, opioid, prescription medication and synthetic drug dependency and misuse.

Next Steps After Our Partial Hospitalization Program

Successful completion of an Intermountain Hospital PHP is an important milestone. Most of our PHP participants step down to our intensive outpatient program (IOP), which has a virtual option. However, follow-up care may require some in-person participation for drug testing, relapse prevention, medication management and employer, school or law enforcement check-ins.
